CLIMATE CHANGE 33 MARKER PLANS

Possible questions:

“The impacts of climate change are more environmental than socio-economic” To what
extent do you agree?

1. Agree - Ecosystem disruption and degradation - coral bleaching - vast temporal scale
as coral bleaching takes ages to recover - 80% of the world's coral has been bleached
- In the last 30 years Indonesia has lost ½ of its coral reef due to bleaching. Only a
small rise in temperature (1-2°C) can cause bleaching. Also, migration of fish species -
cold water species (cod and haddock) migrate northwards to Iceland, warm water
species like sea bass have migrated to UK
2. Disagree - Socio-economic - sea level rise and storm surges in Bangladesh - deaths =
irreversible, spatial scale - 70% of country floods each year
20 million live less than 1m above sea level
SLR could cause Bangladesh a 10% drop in their GDP by 2050
SLR - Carteret Islands
3. Disagree - Socio-economic - disease and health - rising temperatures and also
increase in mosquito breeding sites (secondary impact of flooding - stagnant water) -
WHO forecasts an additional 250,000 deaths a year worldwide between 2030 and
2050 linked to climate change and the spread of infectious disease. Warmer temps =
vectors of disease such as mosquitoes can survive due to increased geographical range
4. Disagree - socio-economic - extreme weather - 2 million deaths are directly linked to
extreme weather events - Since 1970, extreme weather events have cost the world
$4.3 trillion = vast economic impact
5. Both - Destroyed crops (environmental) through salt inundation = issues for food
insecurity. SLR is an environmental impact but the socio-economic consequences are
more profound - threatens loss of ⅙ of country’s land - Ganges brahmaputra delta with
140 million people

“Media representations have significantly shaped public and political responses to climate
change.” Discuss.

1. Agree - documentaries, social media etc
2. Disagree - international organisations - UN - IPCC/ scientists
3. Disagree - political figures - their own agendas eg. prioritising economic growth and
development instead
4. Agree - newspapers - Guardian vs Telegraph - how media portrays Trump and his
views = skepticism - alters responses
