Also referred to as 'external validity', the extent to which the results of a study are
useful in settings other than the setting in which the research was conducted; the
extent to which the results derived from a sample may hold true in the population
from which that sample was selected.

Generalisability

,Useful materials, often reporting research, other than books and journal articles. They
include newspapers, conference proceedings and abstracts, theses and documents
produced by governments, private organisations and charities.

Grey literature

Normally used in methods texts to refer to the quantitative analysis of texts or images,
content analysis is in practice often combined with Thematic content analysis to
produce a broadly interpretive approach in which quotations as well as numerical
counts are used to summarise important facets of the raw materials analysed.

Content analysis

Computer programs that support the management and exploration of most types of
qualitative data, enabling thematic coding, database organising, concept mapping
and other components of qualitative data analysis.

A variable that has two values (e.g. Yes/No; male/female).

, Dichotomous

Assumptions, sets of concepts or explanations that guide our understanding of
knowledge or phenomena. Although empiricists may value objective facts more than
theory, it is generally agreed nowadays that theory can help inform a particular
approach to researching a problem.

Theory

The capacity of a measuring device, of different people coding qualitative materials,
or indeed of a whole research study, to produce the same results on different
occasions when examining the same object of study. Reliability enhances confidence
in validity, but is insufficient on its own to show validity, since some measurement
strategies can produce consistently wrong results.

Reliability

A variable which has the properties of identity, magnitude and equal intervals
between points. The Celsius scale of temperature is an example. (See also Nominal
variable , Ordinal variable and Ratio scale )

, Interval

Research primarily dealing with non-numerical data, such as images, field note
observations, texts, video and audio. It encompasses a large range of methods of
data collection and analysis.

Qualitative research

Knowledge, for example theories or scientific explanations, which approximates
closely to 'truth' when it conforms to reality, and is free from personal bias.

Objectivity

The study of a single 'case' - for example, a person, an institution, an event. How
'caseness' is defined depends on the logic of the particular research inquiry. For
example, a nation might be thought of as a 'case' for certain purposes, even though a
nation contains many people, each of which might be understood as a 'case' in some
other inquiry. It is not a method of research as such because the data being offered
can have been gathered using a variety of different methods (questionnaire,
qualitative data, quantitative data).
