Introduction



The post-colonial African state emerged from a complex historical process that included
pre-colonial societies, colonial rule, and nationalist struggles for independence.
Although African societies are diverse in culture, history and political experience,
several fundamental socio-economic and political features can be identified across
different countries. A comparison of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),
Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria highlights these shared elements and illustrates the broader
patterns that shaped the evolution of post-colonial African states.
