International Human Rights Law and its Distinction from International
Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law, and International Refugee Law
Introduction

International Human Rights Law (IHRL) is an important part of international law. It shows
that countries around the world agree to protect the dignity and rights of all people. It is
based on the belief that everyone is born free and equal in dignity and rights. Important
documents that form the basis of IHRL include the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (UDHR) of 1948, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)
of 1966, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
(ICESCR) of 1966. Together, these are called the “International Bill of Rights” (Part 1,
Unit 1, p. 8). These documents set rules about human rights and require countries to
respect, protect, and provide for these rights in their own countries, as well as to work
together with other countries to promote and protect them.
