In the first 2 assignments you explored discreet or isolated elements of language
structures. This you did by examining words and sentences. In this assignment, you are
required to use your understanding of these isolated elements to conduct an analysis of
slightly longer texts. In other words, you are expected to conduct an analysis in which
you demonstrate your understanding of the relationship between the language system
as a whole and longer texts.
Because of the high levels of plagiarism and copying, we have experienced in
recent months, we expect every student to present his or her own text.
Find a text of about 300 words long. Acknowledge the source of the text following the

The Jacket
He found the jacket on a rainy Thursday, folded over the low wall that separated the
street from Mama Sonto’s yard. It was a sensible jacket, dark, a little frayed at the cuff,
with a name stitched on the inside: M. Khumalo. Sipho paused, keys in hand, staring at
the neat seam of the name as if it might explain something. The jacket smelled faintly of
smoke and peppermint. He lifted it and felt the weight of someone else’s morning,
someone else’s hurry.
He could have left it. But the rain had soaked his shoes and his pride; he draped the
jacket over his arm and walked into the yard where the children were sheltering beneath
