What valves are closing on S1


tricuspid and mitral at the starting of systole (LUB-dup, heard at
the apex)

What are murmurs?
Blowing sound from turbulent blood flow, frequently found with a
thrill. (3 types: innocent, functional, pathological)

Third heart sound (S3)
Very subtle. Soft, dull, low-pitched after S2. Ventricles resistant to

resistant ventricles (CHF, MI), may be normal in adults after
exercise.

Summation Gallop (S4, S1, S2, S3 together), pericardial friction

Infants/children- larger lymph nodes
Aging adult- arteriosclerosis, calf veins enlargement, lymph nodes
decrease in size and number




Subjective questions for peripheral vascular assesment
Leg pain or cramps, skin changes on arms & legs, edema, lymph
node enlargement, medications (esp. blood thinners), occupation,
recent travel (increased risk for blood clots due to pooling in legs
from sitting on plane for long time), recent surgery (blood thinner,
loss of blood volume, risk of infection, decreased physical activity
therefore decreased blood flow)




What is profile sign?
The angle between the nail plate and skin. Angle of more than 180
means clubbing: consequence of some heart disease, CHF, chronic
arthritic. Occurs because fingers are not getting enough O2 causing
the nail beds to flatten.




Risk factors for DVT

, bedrest, immobility, surgery




Signs/Symptoms of DVT
redness, swollen, painful calf




Prevention of DVT
Encourage mobility if able. Compression stocking, SC heparin




Edema scale
1+ mild, slight indentation
2+ moderate
3+ deep pitting, swollen leg
4+ very deep, leg very swollen




What is the function of the sinuses
Provide voice resonance, lightens weight of skull
