"If I had gone back into the house to the kitchen, to my room, out the back door, if I had
left the porch and followed Frank's steps down the front walk- I would never have heard
the conversation between my father and mother, and perhaps I would have lived out my
life with an illusion about my family and perhaps even the human community. Certainly I
could not tell this story..." - Answer -David explains that had he not heard what his
parents were discussing, he would have been completely oblivious to the corruption in
his family. He now understands that no one is perfect and everyone has evil within
them.
"Are you telling me this because I'm Frank's brother? Because I'm your husband?
Because I'm Marie's employer?... or because I'm the sheriff." - Answer -Gail tells her
husband Wes about the unfortunate events happening to Marie due to Frank. Wes
realizes this will cause quite an upset in not only the community but his family as well.
He tries to avoid the situation from progressing by asking his wife Gail if she is telling
him this as Frank's brother, her husband, Marie's employer, or the sheriff. Each role
Wes plays holds a different reaction to what Gail is saying. Wes now has to put his roles
in order form least to greatest to determine what action he will take.
"Had I any sensitivity at all I might have recognized that all this talk about wind and dirt
and mountains and childhood was my mother's way of saying she wanted a few
moments of purity, a temporary escape from the sordid drama that was playing itself out
in her own house. But I was on the trail of something that would lead me out of
childhood" - Answer -David is pushed outside with his mother in an attempt to shield
David from the realities of life. Gail talks to David and understands that his mother need
a hiatus from all of the chaos and drama surrounding every aspect of her life. Gail
talking about her childhood and enjoying the mountain air is how Gail spends her
mental pause from the drama occurring inside the house.
"...I hadn't even known it but I needed to kill something." - Answer -David is out with his
gun thinking about the previous events. He has no desire to practice his shot so instead
he sees how many shots he can fire one after another. After he accidentally kills a
magpie, he realizes he really needed to kill something. The magpie was a scapegoat for
all of David's feelings.
"Looking in the dead bird's eye, I realized that these strange, unthought of connections--
sex and death, lust and violence, desire and degradation-- are there, there, deep in
even a good heart's chambers." - Answer -David is looking into the Magpie's eyes as
they glass over from alive to dead. David, a twelve-year-old boy, is quite mature for his
age. Young adults typically do not and cannot understand the magnitude of the
following statement. Every person has a bad side. No one can be 100% good.
