According to unit 2 practical scientific procedures and techniques, I have
successfully completed a lot of different research and various experiments like
Titration, Chromatography, and colorimetry. Through these different researches
and experiments I have improved myself in communication, working
independently and self-accuracy. These skills I have gained will be beneficial for
my future studies and university application.
While doing these practical, I must take care of many different things like health
and safety, communicating with group and working accurately. In all these health
and safety was the most important one. During some experiments, everyone in
my class including me, was aware to the dangers and how to get safe while doing
the experiment. The main risk was associated with handling chemicals like
(hydrochloric acid and sodium hydrogen sulphate), which can be very harmful if
they got any contact with eyes, skin, and burn the cloths. For that the
precautionary measures was very necessary so I wore goggles and lab coat before
I started the experiment. To prevent incidents like slipping or falling while holding
the chemicals. I put chairs and bags under the table, and I did my experiment
while standing on the top side of the table with no access of Chaires and bags. I all
practical's the use of glassware was also presenting the potential risks, that if the
glassware breaks, I can cause injuries such as cutting hands and damaging cloths
etc. So, maintaining health and safety I carefully handled every single apparatus.
furthermore, when we used Bunsen burner in 2b I learned how to use it that
causing no risks of fire. Overall, I finished every single experiment causing no
injury and equipment broken.
Another skill that I developed was the skill of calibrating equipment. The
equipment that I calibrated during this unit includes (digital balance, glass
thermometer, digital thermocouple, pipette and pH meter etc.). Equipment
calibration is a very important skill, especially in scientific research. According to
the technicians the skill of calibrating is essential to support accuracy of
, measurements. So, I repeated the calibration of my equipment before each
practical.
2A Titration and colorimetry
I started this experiment by improving my skill in calibrating equipment like (pH
meter, weighing scale and volumetric pipette) and plotting a graph. Which I really
enjoyed. My weakness for this experiment was the calibration because it was my
first time doing that, so I was little nervous while doing calibration. While making
the graph I was very confident because I already had that skill. Through this
experiment, I increased my knowledge about graphs to a bit higher level.
Another skill that I improved was the skill of independent research. The whole
class was given a task from the teacher to find the density of the water at room
temperature. For that I find out the densities of water at different room
temperatures from google and use that to complete my calculation.
Before starting the next experiment, I improved myself in finding various
calculations such as volume, mass, Relative formula mass and relative atomic
mass, in which I was confident to find them. I found out my weakness when my
teacher started talking about how to find concentration and moles of the
solution. After my teacher explained it to me, I learned it very well and improved
myself in balancing the equations.
Making standard solution_
In the next experiment, we used sodium hydrogen sulphate, it was my first time
using any solution. I started this experiment with improving my skill in calibrating
the weighing scale. Me and my group successfully calculated the mass of the
solution in 2 decimal places. Then I learned the use of best equipment for that we
used the beaker, taking care of health and safety we use the spatula, using that
we put our weighted solution into the beaker. Then we filled the beaker with
distilled water and our standard solution was ready. And we can see that below.
