Question:

Environmental governance is a fundamental component of sustainable development and
effective environmental management.
Write an essay in which you evaluate the concept of 'Environmental Governance,'
and describe the main aspects of governance as they relate to environmental
management.

The Framework of Stewardship: Evaluating Environmental Governance for
Sustainable Management

Introduction

Environmental governance has become a fundamental part of sustainable development
and successful environmental management. It covers all the rules, practices, policies
and organisations that guide how people interact with the natural world (UNDP). So
bringing together government bodies, businesses, communities and other groups at
local, regional and national levels, environmental governance helps ensure that
decisions about land, water and air use are made in a coordinated way. Its aim is to
protect ecosystems, use natural resources responsibly and support human health and
well‑being. In South Africa, this involves aligning national laws like the National
Environmental Management Act with provincial and local planning, encouraging public
participation, and building strong institutions that can monitor, enforce and adapt policies
to meet both present and future needs. (Study guide. Learning unit 7 )
