SECTION A
Reflection on Unit 4 and Small Things
Before I started studying this module and Unit 4, I used to read novels occasionally, mostly for leisure
and personal growth. One novel I thoroughly enjoyed was Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi
Adichie. What drew me into this novel was its realistic portrayal of life in postcolonial Nigeria and
how it explored themes of silence, power, and freedom within a family unit. I particularly
appreciated Adichie’s use of Kambili as a narrator because her shy and observant personality offered
an intimate glimpse into her household’s fear under her father’s religious extremism. The novel’s
setting, transitioning between the strict environment at home and the liberating atmosphere at
Aunty Ifeoma’s house, exposed me to the social, cultural, and political tensions that affect family
life in Africa (Adichie, 2003). On the other hand, I once tried reading Heart of Darkness by Joseph
Conrad, but I did not enjoy it at all. I found its writing style dense and confusing, with long,
meandering sentences that often lost me. I also disliked how it portrayed Africa through a colonial
gaze, depicting it as a dark, savage land without humanising its people, which felt offensive and
demeaning from my perspective as an African reader.
