Cycle
SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) - ANS-One of the oldest and most common
methodologies; is a process for planning, creating, testing and deploying information systems
including hardware and software. Companies use SDLC to create systems that meet or surpass
the needs of their customers. Often depicted as a staircase or waterfall (and is sometimes
referred to as the waterfall model as you can see in the model below).

Preliminary Investigation - ANS-SDLC begins when an organization discovers a problem or
opportunity that a new system could be developed to address. During this first step, the team
assesses the feasibility of the proposed project and selects a development methodology.
Preliminary investigation is the first step in the SDCL and maintenance is the last step. - During
the initial step of the SDLC, an opportunity may present itself to the organization requiring a new
system to be developed. It is during this initial phase that the expected costs and benefits of this
new system are estimated to see if it makes sense to the organization to proceed with the
system. While this unit describes the SDLC methodology, there are many others that
organizations use and it is at the preliminary phase in which the methodology used for a
particular project is determined.
Analysis - ANS-The team determines the user requirements for the new system and develops
logical models of the system (i.e., graphic displays that demonstrate the relationships between
resources, activities, and outputs and outcomes). - During the analysis stage of SDLC, the team
develops an understanding of the system requirements. - they typically order them from most
important to least important.
Logical Design - ANS-During this step, the logical models developed during the second step are
revised to ensure that the new system will meet the user requirements identified in the first step.
The logical design step occurs after the analysis has taken place and before a physical design
is made.
Physical Design - ANS-The logical models are converted into physical models. These physical
models are still abstractions of the system that will be built later, but they are now more
complete and may include network maps and descriptions of servers and other devices to be
used in the system.
