Reflection Paper: Understanding HIPAA and its Impact on Social Work Practice
HIPAA enables healthcare professionals to safeguard individual privacy while
controlling health information security through its regulations. Healthcare providers and social
workers who handle sensitive patient data must comprehend all HIPAA aspects since this
knowledge benefits both their clients and their professional practice. This paper reflects on my
dealings with HIPAA regulations and details two primary HIPAA regulations in healthcare
settings, along with an analysis of the communication regarding my rights from my provider.
This paper also analyzes the relationship between the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) Code of Ethics and HIPAA.
Two HIPAA Regulations for Healthcare Providers
Under HIPAA, the Privacy Rule is one of the primary enforcement regulations that
establish standards to safeguard health information. The Privacy Rule of HIPAA mandates that
health data stays confidential while establishing cases for allowed disclosures such as treatment
purposes or patient consent (Abbasi & Smith, 2024). The regulatory framework extends to cover
all healthcare entities and insurance companies together with a mechanism that enables patients
to decide who views their health data.
The Security Rule establishes national standards that protect electronic protected health
information (ePHI). The Rule mandates that healthcare providers deploy technical,
administrative, and physical safeguards to protect electronic health records through provisions of
confidentiality, integrity, and availability (Abbasi & Smith, 2024). The Rule contains specific
