1.1 Define the concept of "Common Fraction".
A common fraction is a way of showing a part of a whole. It is written using two numbers
a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number). The numerator shows
how many parts you have, and the denominator shows how many equal parts the whole
is divided into.
For example In the fraction ¾, the 3 is the numerator, and the 4 is the denominator.
It means we have 3 out of 4 equal parts.
In Grades 4 to 6, learners work with common fractions such as halves (½), thirds (⅓),
quarters (¼), fifths (⅕), sixths (⅙), sevenths (⅐), eighths (⅛) and more.
1.2 Identify and explain any two key concepts from the definition of a common
fraction given above.
1. Numerator and Denominator
These are two important parts of a fraction.
The numerator (top number) tells us how many parts we have.

For example, in ⅖, the 2 is the numerator and the 5 is the denominator.

A common fraction always shows a part of something whole.

of those parts.
For example, if a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices, and you eat 3 slices, you ate ¾ of the
pizza, a part of the whole.
