The Changing Economic and Political Dynamics in Africa

Over the last thirty years, many African countries have undergone notable, though
often inconsistent, shifts in their economic and political landscapes (Abugre, 2020). In
the post-independence period, some nations, such as Kenya, adopted ideologies like
African Socialism. This approach was characterised by a dominant public sector,
numerous state-run enterprises, and protectionist measures, including steep tariffs on
imported goods, aimed at promoting self-reliance. Although initial progress was
observed particularly in the agricultural sector by the early 1990s, signs of economic
stagnation had begun to surface.
