Ch 9 L 2: Early Stages
1. First Battle of Bull Run:
-First month of Civil War (1861, July)
-South attacked southern Wash DC.
-South won Confederate victory
-Both started conscriptions with exceptions (plantation owners, gov, teachers)
-North bounty (payment for signing up) 500k
-Shocked North (not easy and short)
2. Naval Blockade:
-Abraham lincoln proclaims a blockade of all Confederate ports (Intended to hurt the
south's economy)
-Caused smuggling to the blocked ports (small vessels, hard to stop)
-Amount that made it through the blockade was much less than their normal trades
-Confederate ships attacked Union ships (hurt the us relation with britain)
-Union thought that Britain shouldnt have built these ships for the confederates
3. New Orleans:
-April 1862
-Admin Farragut (Union) captures New Orleans
-Win for Union
-New Orleans biggest city and port of the South (important for trading)
4. Shilo:
-April 1862
-Union victory
-TN and MS linked
-US Grant was general
-20k troops killed or wound (most bloodiest battle)
5. Murfreesboro:
-1862
-Confederate troops move West
-Battle had no victory (lot of victims)
6. The Peninsula Campaign:
-June 1862
-Virginia peninsula
-Robert Lee inflicts heavy casualties stops union advances
-Was a strategic failure for the union
-Lincoln fires a lot of generals because he lost faith in him
-US Grant was a trusted general
