Task 3 C489

Vermelia J. Massey

Western Governors University

A. Compare the U.S. healthcare system with the healthcare system of England, Japan, Germany, or
Switzerland, by doing the following:

1. Identify one country from the following list whose healthcare system you will compare to the U.S.
healthcare system: England, Japan, Germany, or Switzerland.

I am choosing to compare the healthcare system of England.

2. Compare access between the two healthcare systems for children, people who are unemployed, and
people who are retired.

In regards to healthcare coverage for children, in the United States we have health coverage called CHIP
(Children’s Health Insurance Program) which is strictly for children under the age of 19. The
requirements for eligibility are the child has to be under the age of 19, has to be uninsured (ineligible for
Medicaid and not covered by group or creditable health insurance), be a citizen or meet immigration
requirements, be a resident of the state and meet specific income eligibility rules which are specific by
state (Medicaid, 2024). It was created for children in low income families that earn more than the
required minimum to meet Medicaid requirements but cannot afford private insurance. In England, they
have a universal health coverage under the National Health Service act of 1946 that provides all English
residents free public health care, this includes infants and children. It provides all the preventative
services including screenings, immunizations and vaccinations. It also covers all inpatient and outpatient
hospital care as well as physician services (International Profiles of Health Care Systems, 2020).

For the unemployed in the United States, there are the options of Medicaid, purchase private insurance
or pay cash for each visit and/or services rendered. Medicaid is a program that gave states the option to
receive federal funding to provide healthcare service to low income families, the blind and individuals
with disabilities (International Profiles of Health Care Systems, 2020). For the unemployed in England, it
is no different if you were employed – as long as you are an English resident, you are automatically
entitled to free public healthcare through the National Health Services (International Profiles of Health
Care Systems, 2020).

Generally in the United States, once a person reaches the age of 65, they are considered to be of
