Fetal Development - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔Pre-embryonic stage : AKA the germinal

phase 1st 2 weeks after conception

Begins with Fertilization which takes place in the ampulla of the fallopian tube.

Then cleavage (mitosis) occurs : zygote is transported to the uterine cavity by tubal

muscular movements

Morula : after 4 cleavages, 16 cells result. The morula reaches the uterine cavity

approx 72 hours after fertilization. Fluid from uterine cavity produces nutrients,

enters the morula, the blastocyst is formed

Blastocysts : the morula enters uterine cavity and is fed nutrients in which turns

into a blastocyst

Trophoblast : outer ring of cells of blastocyst, this forms the placenta and

membranes

Implantation : implantation occurs 7-10 days after conception in the endometrium

,Embryonic Stage : end of 2nd week through 8th week

Basic major body organs and main external features

Fetal Stage : end of the 8th week - birth

Conception - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔In an hour the ovum is released from ovary and

passes into the fallopian tube where it travels down to the sperm

In about 5 hours one spermatozoon enters the ovum's thick outer membrane and

pregnancy begins

In 40 weeks (9 months) after fertilization, the fetus fully matures and is born

Implantation (7-8 days)

Implantation - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔The zygote is moved toward the uterus and

implants about 6-8 days after ovulation, which forms into about 100 cells and is

now called a blastocyst

Trophoblast attaches to the endometrium for nourishment

The process of attachment and placental formation is called implantation

Blastocyst secretes human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) - a human stimulates the

corpus luteum to produce progesterone to maintain pregnancy

, Embryonic Layers - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔Ectoderm : forms the central nervous system,

special senses, skin and glands

Mesoderm: forms skeletal, urinary, circulatory and reproductive organs

Endoderm : forms respiratory system, liver, pancreas, and digestive system

Embryonic membrane : uterus/fundus, amnion (amniotic fluid), chorion, umbilical

cord, placenta, uterine fundus

Embryonic Stage - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔Begins at 15th day after conception and

continues through week 8, all the cells are known now as an embryo

Complex organs and features currently

Most critical time for organ development and main external systems

Amniotic Fluid - 🧠 ANSWER ✔✔surround the embryo

2 sources from maternal blood to fetal urine

Helps maintain fetus body temp, permits symmetric growth and development,

cushion the fetus from trauma, allow umbilical cord to be relatively free from

compression

98% water and 2% organic matter
