Critical thinking involves more than memorizing information. The critical
thinking student must know how to apply information, synthesize multiple
sets of data, and evaluate. Nursing exams require students to use higher
levels of thinking. Exam questions will be written at the application, analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation levels.
It is important for critical thinking nursing students to prepare well for
exams and to know how to "reason" through tests.

Narrowing data down to pertinent information helps prevent the
unnecessary facts from cluttering the critical thinker's brain and allows the

The model depicts what it takes to think critically as a nurse. Beginning at
the top and moving to the right:
1) Develop critical thinking characteristics & behaviors: Hold yourself to
high standards. Make a commitment to develop critical thinking
characteristics such as honesty, fair-mindedness, creativity, patience, and
confidence.
2) Acquire the theoretical and experiential knowledge as well as intellectual
skills related to the nursing process: Take responsibility and seek new
learning experiences to assist you in obtaining the theoretical and
experiential knowledge to think critically. Practice the critical thinking skills
taught in this course and in future courses.
3) Gain interpersonal and self-management skills: these include teamwork,
resolving conflict, and being an advocate. Learn how to give and take
feedback.
4) Expand technical skills and competencies: Practice until skills become
second nature. Until then, they have the potential to interfere and make it
difficult to focus on other important thinking responsibilities.
