1. Core Concepts of Engineering & Design
How to create the best solution: Engineers think "outside the box" to solve
new problems and improve existing solutions.
Engineering: The application of mathematics and scientific principles to
better or improve life.
Engineer: A person trained to use technological and scientific knowledge to
solve practical problems.
Engineer's Work: Engineers can work in various roles, including research,
development, design, supervision, management, production, construction,
operations, plant management, and sales.
Invention: A new product, system, or process that has never existed before,
created through study and experimentation.
Innovation: An improvement of an existing technological product, system,
or method.
Design: An iterative decision-making process that converts resources into
products or systems that meet human needs or solve problems. It is also a
plan or drawing showing how something will look and function.
, Constraint: A limitation or restriction on a design process, such as
appearance, funding, space, materials, or human capabilities.
Brainstorming: A group technique for solving problems by generating
ideas through unrestrained, spontaneous participation.
Research: The systematic study of materials and sources to establish facts

2. The Design Process
The design process is a structured, six-step procedure:
1. Define Problem: Identify the problem, and create a Design Brief that
specifies criteria and constraints.
2. Generate Concepts: Brainstorm potential solutions, conduct research, and
explore alternatives.
3. Develop a Solution: Select the best option based on a vote and
consideration of size, cost, and function. Technical working drawings are
produced.
4. Construct and Test a Prototype: Build a functional, full-scale model and
collect test data.
5. Evaluate Solution: Analyze the test results, quantify findings, reflect on the
design, and recommend improvements.
6. Present Solution: Communicate the final design through a formal
presentation or technical report.
3. Documentation and Communication
Engineering Notebook: A legal document where engineers formally and
chronologically document all work related to a design project. It is used to
prove the origin of an idea, a timeline of events, and diligence in developing
the solution.
