EC-6 Math 391

The Addition Property of Equality (ANS) states that a statement will still be equal if the
amounts on either side of an equal sign are added equal amounts. If a=b, then a + c = b + c
Algorithms are ANS-systematic approaches that consistently yield correct solutions to
problems. Area = Base x Height
Area Models - ANS-Using the expanded form of a number, each number is multiplied
together and the products are added to find the final answer
Example finding the area of the backyard plus the area of the dog run next to the back yard
An operation is associative if regrouping the terms does not alter the outcome. Associative
property - ANS (a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
Common Denominator - ANS-when 2 fractions share the same total parts of whatever item
or items are being represented
1/3 and 2/3
Commutative Property - ANS-An operation is commutative if changing the order of terms
does not change the outcome
a+b=b+a
Conjectures - ANS-guesses without proof while doing mathematics
Counting On - ANS-starting on one number and counting until reaching the second number;
a typical technique is saying the counting numbers out loud while using fingers to keep track
of how many numbers have been used
30 plus 5: 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35
(at 30, zero fingers would be held out and at 35, 5 fingers)
Utilizing two or more known premises to reach a conclusion is known as deductive
reasoning, or ANS. All cats say meow. (premise #1)
Jackie is a cat. (premise #2)
As a result, we can infer that Jackie says "meow." Denominator - ANS-The bottom number
in a fraction
Distributive Property - ANS-a(b + c) = ab + ac
An number in front of a group of terms will multiply all terms in the grouping individually
Division Property of Equality - ANS-If the quantities on each side of an equal sign are both
divided by the same amount, the resulting statement will still be equal.
if a = b and c is not equal to 0, then a/c = b/c
Estimating - ANS-rounding numbers or approximating them to quickly perform math
operations
exit ticket - ANS-A single question or short sequence of problems to solve at the end of
class.
Expanded Form / Expanded Notation - ANS-break apart each digit in the number and show
the digits true value
4,358→4000+300+50+8
Formal Reasoning - ANS-the use of logic and algorithms to reach conclusions
answer questions and solve problems that have a single solution
