A Cultural, Interactionist, and Structural Perspective
The act of excluding a child who is seven years old and has cerebral palsy from a young
soccer club within the local community gives rise to substantial apprehensions about
discrimination issues and the availability of sporting opportunities. In order to properly handle
this issue, it is imperative to thoroughly analyze it from a range of sociological viewpoints,
encompassing cultural, interactionist, and structural theories. Each perspective provides a distinct
framework for examining the circumstance and identifying the most appropriate approach to
tackling the issue of prejudice.
Cultural Theories
Cultural theories emphasize the impact of values, norms, and cultural practices on social
behavior and institutions (Braun, 2019). Cultural theories provide valuable insights into the
influence of societal views regarding ability, handicap, and inclusion on sports participation
within contested activities (Braun, 2019). Excluding a child with cerebral palsy can be
interpreted as a reflection of cultural values promoting physical prowess in individuals without
disabilities. Adherence to these societal norms frequently results in the exclusion and
marginalization of those with disabilities within the realm of sports (Braun, 2019). In order to
analyze this case using cultural theories, we must undertake the following steps:
