What is the primary role of Human Placental Lactogen (hPL)? How does
it accomplish this role? - ANSWER - •The primary role of hPL is
regulating glucose availability for the fetus. hPL is an insulin antagonist

, that increases maternal metabolism and use of fat as an energy
substrate and reduces glucose uptake and use by maternal cells. As a
result, more glucose is available for transport to the fetus. Thus hPL acts
as a growth-promoting hormone, promoting fetal growth by altering
maternal metabolism.

When does production of hPL begin, rise and peak? - ANSWER -
•Production of hPL by the syncytiotrophoblast begins 12 to 18 days
after conception (5 to 10 days after implantation), rises during
pregnancy, and peaks near term. hPL is the most abundant placental
secretory product.

What is the main synthesis site of steroidogenesis (the production of
estrogen and progesterone) in early pregnancy? What takes over this
production and when? - ANSWER - •Early in gestation, the corpus
luteum is the main synthesis site, but by 6 to 8 weeks the placental
syncytiotrophoblast has taken over as the major producer.

Where is progesterone produced in early and later pregnancy? What is
its production dependent upon (and not dependent upon)? - ANSWER
- •Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum (under the influence
of hCG) during the first 6 to 10 weeks after fertilization.
•After that period, progesterone is synthesized primarily by the
placenta .
