1.1) In your own words, describe what CAPS is and discuss its significance within
the South African education system.
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) is a detailed and
structured national curriculum used in South African schools. It was introduced by
the Department of Basic Education in 2012 to improve teaching and learning.
CAPS clearly outlines what teachers must teach and assess in each subject and
grade, and how much time should be spent on each topic.
CAPS is important because it ensures that all learners across the country receive
the same quality of education. It helps teachers know exactly what to teach and
when, which improves planning and consistency in classrooms. CAPS also focuses
on developing skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and
communication, which are necessary for learners to succeed in life and work.
Furthermore, CAPS supports fairness by including guidelines for assessment,
helping teachers to evaluate learners in the same way across all schools. It also
aims to reduce confusion and improve performance by making the curriculum
easier to follow for both teachers and learners.
