Assignment Task
Write an 1200 - 1600 word essay in which you conduct research and write an
essay on Decolonisation and Africanisation in Education.
Decolonisation and Africanisation in education have become increasingly
important topics of discussion in recent years. The call to decolonise education is
rooted in the recognition of the historical marginalisation and exclusion of Afro-
centric perspectives in the philosophy of education. This essay will explore the
theme of social justice education and its relationship to decolonisation, with a
specific focus on the South African context.
Social Justice Education and Decolonisation
Social justice education focuses on fairness, equal rights, and opportunities for all
learners, no matter their background, gender, race, or culture. In many African
schools, learners still face unfair treatment because the education system was
built during colonial times to benefit only a few. This is where decolonisation
becomes important. Decolonisation in education means removing the old colonial
ways of teaching and replacing them with learning that respects and includes
African knowledge, languages, cultures, and histories (Heleta, 2016, p. 2). It allows
students to see themselves and their communities in the curriculum.
When schools only teach from a Western view, it ignores the lives, values, and
experiences of African learners. Social justice education pushes back against this
by making sure that learning is inclusive and empowering. It teaches learners to
think critically about inequality, and it encourages teachers to use local examples
and knowledge in their lessons. By combining social justice and decolonisation,
schools can become places where all learners feel respected, included, and
valued. This kind of education helps build a more just and equal society because it
supports learners in understanding their rights and responsibilities in shaping a
better future.
