Constructive criticism - ANS Comments made in a qualified manner to change behaviour and
develop professional practice.
Extenuating circumstances - ANS Conditions beyond your control which delay normal action
or reaction time.
Abuse - ANS An action deliberately intended to cause harm or distress. Including physical,
emotional, mental, psychological, sexual, etc.
Civil rights - ANS The right to political and social freedom, and equality.
Legal rights - ANS The rules set by a legal system about what a person is entitled to, such as
the protection of property of person.
Human rights - ANS The principles of human behaviour expected of everyone regardless of
nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour or religion. Law that requires
workers to respect the dignity of people using the service.
Neglect - ANS Failure to provide proper care. The failure of a carer to provide the necessities
of life to a person for whom they are caring. This can be intentional or unintentional.
Act of omission - ANS Failing to provide something which is needed, such as medication or
respect.
Psychological trauma - ANS A feeling of helplessness and vulnerability following very
stressful events.
Empathy - ANS The ability to recognise and understand the feelings of others.
Defraud - ANS To trick or deceive someone into giving you money.
Power of Attorney - ANS The legal authority granted to an individual to make decisions on
behalf of someone else.
Controlling behaviour - ANS Domination and manipulation of one individual by another.
Coercive behaviour - ANS Manipulation of one person by another, usually through threats.
Disempower - ANS Make a person or group less confident or less likely to succeed.
