Question 1

1.1

Provide five (5) practical examples of opportunities that parents can create at
home to promote emergent literacy skills in the early years.

Parents can help young children develop early reading and writing skills at home
in simple and fun ways. Here are five practical examples:

Reading Together Daily: Parents can read books with their children every day. This
helps children learn new words and understand stories (Neuman & Dickinson,
2011, p. 25).

Talking Often: Parents should talk with their children about everyday things. This
builds vocabulary and helps children understand how language works (Whitehurst
& Lonigan, 1998, p. 860).

Singing Songs and Rhymes: Singing nursery rhymes or songs helps children hear
sounds and rhythms in language, which supports reading skills later (Goswami,
2002, p. 153).

Playing with Letters and Sounds: Parents can play games that focus on letters and
sounds, such as finding objects that start with a certain letter (Justice & Ezell,
2001, p. 142).

, Providing Writing Materials: Giving children paper, crayons, or markers
encourages them to draw and write, which builds early writing skills (Morrow,
2005, p. 12).

These activities make learning fun and help children build strong literacy
foundations at home.
