Comparing Plagiarism Levels Between HMEMS80 Students Who Have and Have
Not Completed an Academic Integrity/Writing Course
1. Literature Review
Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas without proper credit. In higher
education, it undermines learning and can lead to penalties (Denney et al., 2021). Many
HMEMS80 students may not know how to paraphrase or cite correctly, especially in a
large module with around 1 950 students from Business Management, Industrial &
Organisational Psychology, and Public Administration (Burris-Melville & Burris, 2024).
In response, universities often offer academic integrity or writing courses. These
courses teach students how to quote, paraphrase, and reference, aiming to reduce
plagiarism (AlMarwani, 2020). To measure plagiarism, instructors typically use Turnitin
or similar text-matching tools that give a similarity percentage.
1.1 Background and Definitions
Plagiarism: Copying text or ideas without citation, including direct copying, close
paraphrasing, or purchasing assignments (Denney et al., 2021).
Academic Integrity/Writing Course: A workshop or online module where students learn
correct citation methods, paraphrasing skills, and the reasons why plagiarism is
unethical (AlMarwani, 2020; Zhang et al., 2023).
1.2 Variables Under Study
Independent Variable
Completion status of the academic integrity/writing course (Yes vs. No).
