Lecture 1
o Recall the definition of perfusion in the Giddens' text: "Tissue perfusion refers to the flow of blood
through arteries and capillaries delivering nutrition and oxygen to cells and removing cellular
waste products". Perfusion refers to the "flow of blood".
o Perfusion is necessary for the concept of gas exchange to be normal. The definition of gas exchange
(from Giddens) is: "the process by which oxygen is transported to cells and carbon dioxide is
transported from cells".
As you can see -- these two concepts are closely related -- if you don't ha\‘r‘e one, it is difficult for the
other to have done its "job". '
