International Outbreak
A pathogen that invades and devastates the body's natural defenses that aid in warding off
infections which the body is unable to eliminate or recover from is known as human
immunodeficiency virus or HIV.
Description of Outbreak
Researchers believe the source of the human immunodeficiency virus to be chimpanzees
that were suffering from the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). SIV is a like-minded disease
that destroys the natural defense system of some primates (AVERT, 2019). The belief is that in
the 1920s, humans in Africa consumed chimpanzees that carried the SIV infection as food, or
open lesions came in contact with the animal's blood, thereby infecting the human species and
mutating into the HIV infection (AVERT, 2019). The earliest documented instance of a human
with HIV is in 1959 from a blood specimen from a male in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic
of Congo. Researchers surmise the virus circulated by infected humans involved in what was a
developing sex trade operation, traveled railroads and waterways to nearby towns. People living
in the United States became acquainted with HIV in the early 1980s when homosexual males in
New York and California developed uncommon types of skin cancer known as Kaposi's Sarcoma
and fungal bronchial illnesses known as pneumocystis carinii pneumonia or PCP (OnHealth,
2014). At the start of the epidemic, the disease name was acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
or AIDS. After a year, researchers from the National Cancer Institute ascertained the cause of the
disease to be HIV (Healthline, 2020). In the beginning, individuals assumed only people
transfused with infected blood products, homosexual males, IV heroin drug users, or people of
Haitian descent could contract the HIV disease (Healthline, 2018). By the end of 1985, every
community of the globe announced having at least one HIV case (hiv.gov, n.d.). As of 2018,
