Benchmark - Risk Management Program Analysis - Part One
Fall risk management has become a polarizing topic in hospitals and care centers
nationwide. As the population of elderly adults grows so does the necessity for fall risk
management within all healthcare centers. Shockingly, “Older adults reported about 36 million
falls in 2018, and 85.1% of older adults believed falls can be prevented” (Henry, 2022). Older
patients do not always trust they require fall protections, thus making health care team members
provide tactics to address this issue within the system. This assignment will provide in site into a
fall prevention program, compare it to risk management models, along with an evaluation of the
plan and offer any proposals.
Risk management plan
The risk management plan selected is fall risk management and fall reduction in older
adults. The risk management plan includes identifying patients at risk, identifying potential
hazards, and hazardous situations, targeted solutions, and post fall procedures. Preventing falls is
fundamental in ensuring patient safety within a hospital or healthcare center. One source states
“effective strategies targeting modifiable risk factors can reduce falls and fall-related injuries in
older adults” (Henry, 2022). Prevention is key in eliminating falls at home, and within the
hospital system, yet many elderly adults fall each year within the hospital system driving up the
cost of the patients care and length of the patients stay. One source states “each year, somewhere
between 700,000 and 1,000,000 people in the United States fall in the hospital these falls may
result in increased health care utilization” (Ganz, 2013). Protection and prevention of the patients
not only ensures the patient receives great care but also ensures the hospital receives the correct
compensation for the patients stay.
