What is the Protection for Persons in Care Act (PPCA)? - Answers :■Law promoting
prevention and reporting of abuse of adult Albertans who receive care or support
services
-Services funded by Government of Alberta
■Directly or indirectly

The 3 criteria of the Mental Health Act - Answers :1.The person is suffering from mental
disorder
2.The person is likely to cause harm to self or to suffer substantial mental or physical
deterioration or serious physical impairment, and
3.The person is unsuitable for admission to a facility other than as a formal patient


All 3 criteria must be present in the opinion of a physician in order for the physician to
sign the certificate.

OR
-The formal patient is unsuitable to continue at a facility other than as a formal patient
(in the case of a renewal certificate).

Formal Patient - Answers :■a patient detained in a facility under the Mental Health Act
on the authority of two admission certificates or two renewal certificates

■A person can be brought from the community to a facility by a Peace Officer under a
Form 10

Community Treatment Orders (CTO) - Answers :■Intended to support people in the
community with severe and persistent mental disorder who have history of non-
compliance with treatment
