QUESTION 1
Critically examine the concept of the global village and illustrate with the use of
practical public sector examples.
The term “global village,” first introduced by Canadian media theorist Marshall
McLuhan in the 1960s, reflects the idea that the world is becoming increasingly
interconnected through advancements in electronic communication (McLuhan,
1964). As digital technologies like the internet and mobile phones have evolved,
they have reshaped the way people communicate, access information, trade
goods, and respond to global challenges. This transformation has brought nations,
communities, and individuals closer together, virtually eliminating the barriers of
time and space. However, while the global village presents numerous
opportunities, it also raises significant concerns, especially regarding inequality,
cultural erosion, and cybersecurity.
This essay critically examines the concept of the global village, looking closely at
its key characteristics, its implications for public sectors across the world, and the
challenges it poses. Real-world examples from international institutions and
government agencies are used to illustrate how public bodies navigate the
opportunities and risks of living in a globalised, digitally connected world.
