Enveloped viruses are viruses that have a lipoprotein membrane surrounding their
nucleocapsid, which is the protein shell that encloses the viral nucleic acid. They use outer
surface proteins to attach and infect host cells, and they exit more easily from host cells during
infection.
Virion A complete virus particle, consisting of nucleic acid surrounded by a protective coat of
protein called a nucleocapsid.
Viral Classification The process of categorizing viruses into taxonomic groups based on their
characteristics, such as structure, genome type, and mode of replication.
Taxonomy The classification of organisms into hierarchical groups based on shared
characteristics.
Genus A taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms. It
is a group of species with related characteristics.
Species A group of organisms that are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile
offspring.
Strain/type A variant of a particular virus, often with specific genetic differences that
distinguish it from other variants of the same virus.
Picornavirus A family of small RNA viruses with a single-stranded positive-sense RNA
genome.
