Nominal (qualitative) - correct answer name or categorize things such as gender,
race, or marital status. Social security numbers are nominal because the number means nothing and
cannot be manipulated.
Ordinal (qualitative) - correct answer defines the relationship between entities and
assigns an order or ranking to each. For example CMS assigns a rank to hospitals participating in NPSG.
Interval (quantitative) - correct answer assigns specific distances between the
entities being measured. Then length or amount of distance is defined and equal. It can be hours,
months, inches, feet or whatever is predetermined with the conceptual framework.
Ratio (quantitative) - correct answer similar to interval but the ratio level can define
zero.
Variable - correct answer characteristic of an item or individual. Could be age,
weight, or blood pressure.
Independent variable - correct answer is the variable that can be manipulated to
determine the dependent variables' value. It can stand alone.
Dependent variable - correct answer is dependent on the independent variable. It
changes only in relation to the independent variable.
Extraneous variable - correct answer is unknown when beginning a research study,
but it shows itself in time. Many times it is an unwanted variable and can skew the results of a research
study.
Bias or manipulation - correct answer is one example of an extraneous
variable.Occurs when the researcher influences the results of the study.
