Background to the Problem Statement
Education is very important for the growth and success of any country. It helps
people learn how to read, write, count, and understand the world around them.
Education also helps people find good jobs, support their families, and take part in
the development of their country. In South Africa, education has always played a
big role in the lives of people. However, not everyone in South Africa had the
same chances when it came to education. The history of education in South Africa
is long and painful, especially for black South Africans.
During the time of apartheid, the South African government created laws that
treated people unfairly based on their race. Apartheid was a system that
separated people according to their skin colour. It gave white people more power,
more land, and better services, while black people, coloured people, and Indian
people were treated as second-class citizens. One of the tools that the apartheid
government used to control black people was education. They made sure that
black children did not receive the same quality of education as white children.
In 1953, the apartheid government passed a law called the Bantu Education Act.
This law created a new education system just for black learners. It was called
Bantu Education. The aim of Bantu Education was not to help black children
succeed or become professionals like doctors, lawyers, or teachers. Instead, it was
created to keep black people in low-paying jobs like cleaners, gardeners, and
