 Prevents viral replication
INDICATIONS:
 Antiretrovirals such as Zidovudine are used for the treatment of HIV infections
 Reduction of maternal/fetal transmission of HIV
CONTRAINDICATIONS/PRECAUTIONS:
 Contraindications: Hypersensitivity
 Precautions: severe renal and hepatic impairment, people with decreases bone marrow reserve need a lower dose, In women and obese patients as
they have a higher risk of lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly
>Lactation: Breastfeeding not recommended in mothers with HIV
>Geriatric: Select dose carefully due to potential for age-related decrease in hepatic, renal, or cardiac function.

INTERACTIONS with other Drugs/Substances:
 Decreased bone marrow depression with other agents having bone marrow depressing properties
 Increased neurotoxicity with acyclovir
 Toxicity maybe be increased by concurrent administration of probenecid or fluconazole
