Week one project on life worth and wisdom Part 1 discussion Numerous factors make my life worth living, first is the good relationships I have made with family, friends, and relatives over the years. These meaningful relationships form fundamental social support when exposed to emotional, physical, and financial issues. Especially my spouse, parents, and children are the major support in my life, and I would like to be there in their lives. Secondly is my career life; over the years, I have worked hard professionally to secure good skills, reputation, and promotion. I am working harder to ensure I earn a managerial position in the future which is very encouraging. (Broome, 1978). The comfortable circumstances in my life make it worth living; over the years, I have been slowly acquiring relevant assets to make my life more comfortable. These assets include savings, investing in stocks, and getting a good house and vehicle. Generally, these assets help to make my life easier and encourage me to keep living and using them in the future. Finally, I think religion makes my life worthwhile since we understand that God created us equally and in his image. Philosophy searches for wisdom or new knowledge, while sophistry impacts and provides knowledge and skills. Therefore, sophists are involved in providing answers while philosophers search for knowledge. Plato argued that sophists use deception and have less philosophical facts, while philosophers are self-driven people seeking relevant knowledge and skills. According to Socrates, the philosophical aspects of life should involve determining practical results that promote communal good. The philosophy should not be about earning 3 profits but promoting more happiness in society. As a person knows more, they make better reasoning and choices in life, therefore, leading to true happiness. (McCoy, 2007). Finally, he insisted that people should continually examine their lives since unexamined one is not worth living. Part 2 Q1: dialectic and other conversations According to De Bravo Delorme (2019), dialectic discusses and assesses the truth and conflicts in the philosophical field and their solutions. At the same time, dialogue practically defines the correct beliefs and eliminates the wrong ones. On the other hand, conversations are related to understanding the definition and conclusions and sharing ideas, ensuring practical meaning to issues is found. However, the dialectic is not above providing the best arguments or explaining how circumstances began; therefore, Plato insists that dialogues can be interpreted ad dialectic. According to Socrates, dialogue helps people explore together and make new knowledge and experiences. The dialectic was also used in debating and acquiring philosophers to ask and answer varied viewpoints or arguments. However, the conversation was meant to understand assumptions and make conclusions from a certain perspective. The dialectic helped to provide conventions, determine errors and improve the rigor of the thinking process. Difference between Socrates's dialogue and other conversations The major difference is dialogue, according to Socrates, never had any aims, goals, or targets; it only sought to provide new knowledge and explore a situation. Therefore dialogue was 4 hard to learn and participate in. however, the conversation was more straightforward since there were guidelines of the rules and ideas to be generated during the process. Socrates insisted that dialogue resulted from exploring the world, being open-minded, and collaborating with philosophers, although there were no relevant conclusions to be made after the dialogue. The philosopher's role was to guide the process and provide necessary improvements. Q2: my understanding According to Socrates, a conversation occurs between learners or teachers to leaders where questions are provided, and there is a collaborative approach. Therefore my understanding is that Socrates sought to evaluate different aspects of one's life and how they affected others. Generally according he insists that unexamined life is not worth living, meaning that we should always understand all actions in our lives and how they affect other people. We should first consider understanding whether our actions lead to goodness or whether we are all about wealth. For example, when working for a production company producing children's toys, we can consider whether to use lead, a cheaper raw material but toxic to children,, or use other expensive materials. When lead is used, the company will generate more profits since the initial capital is low; however, this will not lead to general good and happiness since children will fall sick, and fatalities will be observed. Generally, we can apply Socrates's ideas to evaluate the impacts of our company on the customers and make relevant adjustments without considering profitability. Q3: the difference between knowledge and opinion
