- the general rule is, the larger the airway, the louder the sound
- breath sounds are diminished in intensity when normal lung is displaced
- vesicular breath sounds become bronchial (louder on expiration) when
there is fluid/ mucus in areas that normally have vesicular sounds
- adventitious breath sounds are always abnormal but not always significant
