D1. Health Promotion Justification
My patient, a 57-year-old male, is physically fit and in overall good health with no
comorbidities. He doesn’t have health concerns, so we discussed the importance of a healthy
diet, mainly increasing his fruit and vegetable intake. My patient knows he should eat a healthy
diet that includes fruits and vegetables, but he was unsure of how many servings a day and why
it is so important. The impact of increased fruit and vegetable intake is seen in a study that
looked at eating more fruits and vegetables and the belief that eating an appropriate amount
impacts your mood (Smith et al., 2021).
I also educated my patient on the importance of achieving 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
My patient revealed that although he doesn’t have difficulty falling asleep, he often awakens
during the night and has difficulty falling back to sleep. In a recent study, it was shown that
sleep quality and duration affect human physiology, influence the risk for chronic illnesses,
impact productivity at work, and affect cognitive function and decision-making. Adults are
