Executive Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency of mental health and
stress management for healthcare workers, particularly in nursing, where burnout is a
significant issue. The pandemic has accelerated the early retirement of competent
nurses and increased the demand for healthcare professionals. Balancing patient care
needs and personal life can be challenging, but incorporating stress management
techniques and coping strategies into the Governor's University RN to BSN programs
online course NSG 400 Exploring the Professional Nurse Role in the first semester can
be crucial in addressing this issue. The ADDIE framework model shapes this proposal.
The analysis phase for this proposal involved conducting a need gap analysis
and researching the topics covered in the current course to ensure that the material is
comprehensive and relevant. An evidence-based approach was taken, with a literature
review conducted using five peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last five
years. This approach ensures that the proposed curriculum enhancement is
comprehensive and practical. A curriculum need gap analysis was also conducted,
outlining the current curriculum, desired curriculum, and action steps necessary to
bridge the gap. Organizational factor analysis was also done to find the forces for and
against the proposal to aid the need gap analysis.
The design phase of this proposal involved creating two new course objectives
and one student learning outcome specific to the added module in the current
curriculum. This phase included thoroughly analyzing the current course objectives and
student learning outcomes and aligning the new ones. Additionally, the grading

structure and course policies were reviewed to ensure they aligned with the
expectations of this revised course syllabus.
The development phase of this proposal involved researching course materials,
selecting different teaching strategies, including discussion boards, and developing a
real-life context-based scenario learning activity for students during the class. Formative
and summative objective assessments of multiple-choice questions were meticulously
created. Test assessment results will be evaluated using analytical methods such as
item difficulty, item discrimination, and test-level reliability. After the analysis, short-term
and long-term improvement recommendations will be generated based on the data
review.
During the implementation phase, the human, financial, and technological
resources were identified. Next, a timeline chart outlining the week-by-week breakdown
of tasks involving different stakeholders was identified. The next step involved
developing a plan for gathering stakeholder feedback and creating a faculty training
plan to ensure successful implementation and adoption.
Finally, key performance indicators and benchmarks for the course were
established during the evaluation phase. This phase also included creating a plan for
end-of-course surveys to measure its success. Additionally, a plan is developed for
continuous evaluations in various forms, which are essential for course improvement.

Preventing Nurse Burnout and Learning Coping Strategies for
Stress Management
The Governor's University is a nationally ranked school for higher education with a solid
commitment to developing nursing science. RN to BSN online program offers licensed
nurses with associate degrees or nursing diplomas a pathway to earn a BSN degree.
Upon analyzing the curriculum, it was found that there needs to be more new nurses'
knowledge about nurse burnout, its effects, and coping strategies for stress
management. Therefore, it is recommended that a module on preventing nurse burnout
and learning coping strategies for stress management be incorporated into the course
"Exploring the Professional Nursing Role" in semester one. This proposal is based on
Lewin's change theory as its theoretical framework and incorporates cognitive learning
theory, constructivist learning theory, and adult learning theory as its underlying learning
theories. The purpose of this curriculum proposal is to recommend a change in the
current curriculum. It is presented using the ADDIE model for instructional design
curriculum framework. It also includes a literature review supporting the change and
analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation phases of this proposal.
This proposal aims to help student nurses become better professionals who can tackle
their professional and personal lives better.
