Scenario #1
Interpersonal Conflict due to Miscommunication
Karen, a nurse on the day shift, has been feeling increasingly frustrated
with her colleague, Alex, who works on the night shift. Karen believes that
Alex is not properly handing over patient information during the handoff
report, which is confusing the other nurses on her shift. One evening,
Karen snaps at Alex when he asks for assistance with a patient’s chart,
saying, “You should’ve documented that better. I can’t work like this.”
Alex is taken aback and responds defensively, “I’m doing my best, Karen.
I don’t need you criticizing me.” Karen says, “I’ve been telling you for a
while about this. You went to the same nursing school I did.” Alex
responds, “I’m sorry I’m not as good as you are, Karen. You’ve been a
nurse longer than I have.” Tension builds between them, and their
communication becomes strained. Other staff members started noticing
the uncomfortable atmosphere, which is affecting teamwork and patient
care.

Skill Application #1

,Opportunity Statement
The growing tension between Karen and Alex affects the quality of
communication and teamwork, which could ultimately impact patient
care. There is an opportunity for Karen to reflect on her emotional
reactions and address the situation in a way that fosters better
communication, understanding, and collaboration.

Social and Emotional Power Skill
I would use self-awareness to address the conflict, which involves
recognizing and understanding my emotions and how they impact my
behavior. As a nurse leader, I would first encourage Karen to reflect on
her feelings and actions. I would have a private conversation with her to
discuss what triggered her frustration, acknowledging that stress and
workload can cause emotional reactions. By helping Karen recognize her
emotional state, I would guide her to understand how her tone and words
may have affected Alex. I encourage her to express her concerns
constructively, focusing on open communication and collaboration. For
example, Karen could say instead of criticizing, “I noticed some
information was missing on the chart. Can we work together to document
all details properly next time?” This shift would help prevent further
conflict and improve teamwork. Self-awareness allows Karen to manage
her emotions more effectively, leading to healthier interactions and

better outcomes for the team and patients. By understanding her
emotional triggers, Karen can create a more positive and supportive work
environment. I would talk with Alex and see how the interaction made
him feel. I would encourage him to speak with Karen and tell her how her
words and tone made him feel. I would ask him to reflect on the
interaction so that if a similar situation arises between him and another
nurse, he can respond in a caring way.
Strength
I could apply my strength of staying calm in heated moments to
avoid making the situation more tense between others.

Communication Strategy

In this scenario, where Karen and Alex are experiencing communication
issues affecting teamwork, active listening, and collaborative dialogue
would be highly effective in building consensus. Active listening involves
entirely focusing on the speaker, understanding their message,
responding thoughtfully, and retaining information. This strategy
encourages empathy and ensures that each person feels heard and
understood, which is crucial for resolving interpersonal conflicts.

Active listening is appropriate because the root of the conflict between
Karen and Alex lies in miscommunication and emotional responses to
stress. By encouraging Karen to listen to Alex’s perspective and vice
versa actively, the nurse leader can create an open environment for
understanding. In addition, active listening helps each person recognize
the other’s emotions and experiences, reducing defensiveness and
paving the way for a more collaborative conversation.

A collaborative dialogue approach means encouraging both Karen and
Alex to express their concerns, needs, and potential solutions in a
respectful and solution-oriented manner. This approach shifts the
conversation from blame and frustration to mutual problem-solving,
helping to rebuild trust and foster teamwork.
