Topic 6 DQ 1 - What are the health risks associated with pipes, cigars, cigarettes, vaping/or
e-cigarettes for the lifespan of the individual?

Hello everyone,
In the world, there are bunches of people who smoke, but majority individuals are nonsmokers.
The adolescent along with the adult population within the United States has five times as many
nonsmokers as there are smokers. There are a few ways to smoke and plenty of risks that come
with it. (Sarafino & Smith, 2017) Below will be the health risks associated with smoking pipes,
cigars, cigarettes and vaping.
Pipes would refer to the type of device used to smoke tobacco. It contains a chamber that holds
the tobacco that leads into a stem, which eventually turns into a mouthpiece. These devices use
what is known as cured loose-leaf tobacco that is burned by the user. There are a few different
risks associated with the usage of pipes. There are many of the same carcinogens in smoking a
pipe as there is when smoking a cigarette. One of the chemicals within the tobacco is nicotine,
and because of that pipe smoking can become addicting. “Cancers of the head, neck, liver, and
lung are more likely in pipe smokers than nonsmokers. Another risk is, along with the amount of
tobacco used, the number of years that a user has smoked increases the risk of developing cancer.
Another risk is the likelihood of developing heart disease, strokes, and lung diseases.”
(OncoLink Team, 2020).
Cigars are in reference to a rolled up bundle of dried and fermented tobacco leaves. Cigars can
be made in a variety of sizes, shapes, and flavors. A few risks come with using cigars. One risk is
the nitrates along with the nitrites that the aged and fermented by tobacco products. These two
are known to cause cancer, or a carcinogenic. Burning a cigar produces more cancer-related
compounds that are found more in cigar smoke than cigarette smoke. It is simply because a large
cigar can contain as much tobacco as a pack of cigarettes. The amount of nicotine is higher in
cigars, because the nicotine produced is absorbed into the saliva. “This exposes the mouth, lips,
tongue, and throat to the risk of cancer. This is because the addiction that comes with cigars is as
strong as the addiction to cigarettes. Another risk is the increased likelihood of heart, stroke, and
lung diseases. Another risk is the higher amount of secondhand smoke that comes from cigar
smoke as they contain more tobacco and burn for longer than cigarettes.” (OncoLink, 2020).
Cigarettes refer to narrow cylinders that contain burnable product (mainly tobacco) that is rolled
into thin paper. There are a few risks to the usage of cigarettes. One is the 480,000 deaths that
come from smoking a year in the United States. In other words, every one in five deaths is
related to smoking. More than 10 times as many individuals have died too early from such
smoking than those who have died in all fought wars by the United States. Another is the risk of
lung cancer, as smoking causes roughly 90% of all lung cancer deaths. Another risk is the
increased risk of death from all causes in both men and women. The risk of dying via cigarette
smoking has increase in the United States over the last 50 years. Additional rissk is the increased
absenteeism from work and the increased health care utilization and cost for individuals who

, smoke. Another risk is the increased likelihood of developing diseases in the heart and blood
vessels. Smoking can affect the body so much that even those who smoke only five or less
cigarettes a day can show signs of cardiovascular disease. “The risks of stroke, clots, and
blockage also increases. Another risk is that smoking makes getting pregnant more difficult and
the health of the baby if one is pregnant or has children. On the same hand, smoking can affect
the sperm in men. Another risk is the harm smoking does to bone health, tooth health, the risk of
cataracts, diabetes, and arthritis” (CDC, 2021).
E-cigarettes refer to battery-powered devices that, from a liquid state, produces an aerosol for
inhalation. They normally come in a metal tube that resembles a regular cigarette, with a battery,
an atomizer, and a cartridge. E-cigarettes will normally contain liquid nicotine, glycerin,
flavoring, and other additional chemicals. There are a few health risks to the usage of e-cigarette
also known as vaping. One of the biggest risks is the nicotine exposure. Another risk is the
flavoring that comes with such devices, as they tend to appeal to a younger crowd. This has
become such a concern as the percentage of youth in the United States that have been exposed to
nicotine products has increased for the first time in decades. With the open tank system that most
e-cigarettes have, it can allow the users to try vaping other substance. “High doses of nicotine
can be dangerous and/or fatal, especially in children. Another risk for individuals with a mental
illness. Smoking could cause these individuals to die about 25 years before the general
population, especially from chronic disease” (Das & Prochaska, 2017).
