BIOD152 A&P2 Module 6 Exam Study Guide w/ Alternative Questions
Question 1
Which the following statements is true regarding the female reproductive system:

A. The bladder is located posterior to the uterus.
B. The rectum is located anterior to the uterus.
C. The ovaries are the site of estrogen and egg production.
D. It contains the site of the vas deferens

Note: the ovaries are the main reproductive organ in females. The ovaries are two glands that almond
shaped. One ovary is on each side of the uterus below the uterine tubes. Inside each ovary are ovarian
follicles, which each hold an immature egg. Ovulation, or the release of a mature egg, occurs
approximately every 28 days. In the ovarian cycle, an egg is released from the ovarian follicle, which
becomes the corpus luteum after ovulation. The corpus luteum helps maintain pregnancy if an egg is
fertilized. If not, it disintegrates.

***CAN ALSO ASK***

All the following are functions of the ovaries EXCEPT:

A. Production of eggs
B. Maintaining the development of a fetus
C. Production of estrogen
D. Development of the corpus luteum

Note: The uterus maintains the development of a fetus, not the ovaries.

Question 2
Which of the following statements is true concerning oogenesis?

A. It begins at the time of puberty.
B. The primary oocyte divides to produce a secondary oocyte.
C. Each primary oocyte produces in two to three mature ova.
D. The first polar body maintains all the cytoplasm.
E. B&C are true

Note: Oogenesis is the production of eggs in the ovaries that occurs during development of the fetus in
the womb and is complete by the time of birth. Therefore, at birth, a female has all the immature eggs
that she can later ovulate during her reproductive lifetime, which extends from puberty to about her
50th year of life. The end of the female reproductive lifetime is known as menopause.

Female stem cells, known as oogonia, undergo mitotic division into two daughter cells known as primary
oocytes. These primary oocytes are covered by follicles, known as primary follicles. This process is
completed by birth. The anterior pituitary gland starts to secrete follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
when a female reaches puberty. FSH causes a few follicles to mature each month. The primary oocyte in

,the follicle undergoes its first meiotic division into two daughter cells: the secondary oocyte and the first
polar body.

A polar body is produced so that chromosomes divide properly but all the cytoplasm is donated from
the polar body to the secondary oocyte in case of fertilization.

Question 3
The ovarian follicle becomes the ____________ after ovulation.

Answer: corpus luteum

***CAN ALSO ASK***

Ovulation occurs when an egg is released from the ______________ .

Ans: Ovarian follicle

Question 4
Name the specific region of the reproductive system highlighted in blue below (also indicated by the
arrow).

Ans: Fimbriae which are finger-like projections that captures an egg from the ovary at the time
of ovulation

***CAN ALSO ASK***

Name the specific region of the reproductive system highlighted in blue below (also indicated by the
arrow).

Ans: Cervix

, ***CAN ALSO ASK***

Name the specific region of the reproductive system highlighted in blue below (also indicated by the
arrow).

Ans: Fundus of the uterus

Question 5
This layer of the uterus is shed monthly.

A. Correct! Endometrium
B. Mucosal coat
C. Perimetrium
D. Myometrium
E. Serous coat

Note: The uterus is a hollow, thick-walled muscular organ shaped like an inverted pear connecting the
uterine tubes and vagina, and it is in a forward tilted position between the bladder and rectum.

The uterus has three layers: the outer serous perimetrium, middle muscular myometrium, and inner
glandular endometrium.

The muscular myometrium expands during pregnancy to hold the growing fetus and contracts during
labor to push the baby out of the uterus.

The inner endometrium layer is where the embryo completes development. The inner layer is shed
monthly (~28 days) if the female is not pregnant, which is known as menstruation or menses.

***CAN ALSO ASK***

This layer of the uterus contracts during labor

A. Endometrium
B. Mucosal coat
C. Perimetrium
D. Myometrium
E. Serous coat
