Interprofessional Collaboration
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important aspect of health care education and
practice. It focuses on collaborative learning among health care professionals to improve patient
outcomes through a team-based approach. This paper examines the definition, development,
goals, and impact of IPE within health care, emphasizing its role in preparing professionals for
interprofessional collaboration, promoting wellness, and enhancing patient-centered care.
Define Interprofessional Education
Interprofessional education (IPE) involves students from different professions learning
together to promote teamwork in healthcare. Developed to address the complexities of modern
health care, IPE is vital for fostering collaborative practice. The World Health Organization
(2010) highlights its role in improving health services by preparing professionals for teamwork.
The main goals of IPE are to enhance communication skills, improve patient outcomes, reduce
medical errors, advance mutual respect among health care professionals, and strengthen
teamwork abilities. Swanson et al. (2012) proposed that collaboration across disciplines is one of
the “methods and strategies” of system thinking. This means that the health outcomes of patients
can be improved by teaching healthcare professionals how to collaborate (i.e., Interprofessional
Collaborative Practice [IPCP]), which is the goal of Interprofessional Education (IPE).pg28 book
