NURS-FPX4060: Practicing in the Community to Improve Population Health
2
Introduction
Welcome, everyone. My name is Katherine Rodriguez and I am the senior nurse at Tall
Oaks Medical Center. Today, I will be presenting the disaster recovery plan for the Tall Oaks
Community, focusing on reducing health disparities and improving access to essential services in
the aftermath of the recent catastrophic flood. This plan has been developed using the MAP-IT
framework, which ensures a structured and collaborative approach to recovery. Let’s begin by
reviewing the impact of the disaster and the steps we will take to support our community.
Overview of Tall Oaks Flood
Tall Oaks, a small but vibrant community, recently endured a devastating flood that left
more than 60% of the city submerged. The neighborhoods of Willow Creek and Pine Ridge were
particularly hard hit, with homes destroyed and families displaced. These areas are
, predominantly inhabited by elderly residents and lower-income families, making them especially
vulnerable to the effects of the disaster. The floodwaters also caused significant damage to the
city’s infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and the local water treatment plant, which has
raised serious concerns about water contamination. Additionally, the disruption extended to the
healthcare system, where access to medical facilities became severely limited due to impassable
roads. Schools were also affected, leading to the closure of local educational institutions and
further straining the community. In the face of such widespread devastation, it is clear that a
comprehensive and well-coordinated recovery plan is essential to address the immediate needs of
the residents and lay the foundation for a more resilient community in the future. The disaster not
only highlighted the vulnerabilities within Tall Oaks but also underscored the importance of
reducing health disparities and ensuring equitable access to recovery resources for all residents,
especially the most vulnerable.
