• Present in about 35% of all diagnosed diabetic
patients
• Present in about 20% of type 2 diabetic
patients at diagnosis
• By 20 years after diagnosis of DM, 99% of Type
Diabetic 1 and 60% of Type 2 will have Diabetic
Retinopathy
Retinopathy • Nonproliferative: mild, moderate or severe.
Microvascular changes are limited to the retina
• Mild: without visual loss
• Proliferative retinopathy: new retinal, optic
nerve or iris vessels
• Diabetic Macular edema: central retinal
swelling; can occur with any severity;
reduces visual acuity if the center is involved
