TOPIC 1
Restoring Academic Trust – The Need for a Compulsory Integrity Module
In recent years, academic dishonesty has become a widespread concern at universities worldwide.
Plagiarism, cheating during exams, and the unethical use of artificial intelligence are becoming more
common, threatening the value and credibility of higher education. To address this, some universities
have introduced a compulsory module on academic integrity. While some view this as an unnecessary
addition to the curriculum, I believe that this initiative is not only necessary but essential. Such a module
offers long-term benefits by shaping ethical conduct, promoting fairness, and preparing students for
professional life.
One of the greatest advantages of a compulsory integrity module is that it educates students about what
academic misconduct entails. Many students, especially first-years, are not fully aware of how
referencing works or what constitutes plagiarism. A structured module provides clear guidance, helping
them avoid unintentional dishonesty. According to McCabe et al. (2012), institutions that implement
academic integrity education see a significant decrease in reported misconduct. This shows that
awareness and prevention go hand in hand.
Beyond the academic realm, integrity is a lifelong value that benefits society. By instilling principles of
honesty and accountability during students’ formative years, universities play a role in developing ethical
professionals. For example, a student who understands the consequences of fabricating lab results is
more likely to act responsibly in a future workplace, whether in law, business, science, or education. This
contributes to a trustworthy workforce and a more just society.
