Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is the responsibility of all nurses and is vital when addressing the
challenges of the health care industry. Provide an example of how you would apply CQI in your current
or past position. If you are new to health care, select a nurse practice issue and discuss how you would
apply CQI to address the issue. Discuss a quality improvement method that could be used to support
CQI in your example.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references
cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one
reference. Refer to "RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric" and "RN-BSN Participation Rubric," located in
Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation
posts, respectively.

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is an essential part of quality healthcare delivery in the
21st century. With near constant changes in the usage of new policies, medications and protocols,
healthcare systems must have programs that can rapidly identify opportunities for improvement on both
the health care professional and healthcare organizations. The best performing units in the world can
deliver clinical excellence. This is not necessarily because they provide unique treatments or have access
to highly technical equipment. Rather it is because they deliver the most basic care in a quality-assured
manner with exceptional attention to detail.
In my current practice in the Operating Room (OR), CQI has been used to create better charting
for patients during the entirety of their experience in the OR. This has not come without pushback from
surgeons and other nurses. Pushback unfortunately tends to come from individuals who are veterans,
have been doing the job a certain way for a long time, and thus are more resistant to changes. However,
these changes have led to better patient outcomes and fewer safety errors during their surgical stay. Few
professionals in any industry want to be told what they are doing is wrong. However, a successful CQI
program frames these instances as opportunities for improvement rather than punitive in nature. “That’s
why it’s essential for nurses to understand how to respond to small errors or problems in their daily
