Explain what factors lead to conflict in professional practice. Describe how organizational
values and culture can influence the way conflict is addressed. Discuss effective strategies
for resolving workplace conflict and preventing violence.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least
two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150
words and include one reference. Refer to "RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric" and
"RN-BSN Participation Rubric," located in Class Resources, to understand the
expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.
A professional practice model describes how registered nurses practice, collaborate,
communicate, and develop professionally to provide the highest-quality care for those served by
an organization. Some factors that can lead to conflict in professional practice are poor
management/leadership, poor communication, poor work culture, poor behavior, undervalued
staff, stress and burnout, and differing personal values and beliefs from the organization. The
negative consequences include dysfunctional teamwork, decreased patient and staff satisfaction,
increased cost to the organization, and increased employee turnover. Conflict can't be avoided,
but it can be managed (Overton & Lowry, 2013). There are may ways to respond to conflicts
including open communication, mediation, empathy, correcting underlying issues, compromise,
guidance, and following a precedence. It is also important to discourage any bullying or
retaliation while solving these conflicts (American Nurses Association, n.d.). One important way
to manage conflicts is to have “crucial conversations” which is a “discussion between two or
more people where (1) the stakes are high, (2) opinions vary, and (3) emotions run strong.
Confrontations are those face-to-face conversations in which someone is held accountable”
(Overton & Lowry, 2013, para 9). In a charge nurse class I teach, it is noted that more than
50% of the time that there is conflict, it is resulted from miscommunications and
misunderstandings. Being able to have these conversations calmly and respectively is key to
successful conflict resolution.
