Given this, you are required to complete a reflective essay of about 1800 – 2000
words in which you reflect on what you think (1) makes and/or constitutes an
exceptional educational researcher in a context like South (Africa), and (2) what
do you think will inform and shape your own becoming of an educational
researcher.
In this essay, I reflect on what it means to be an exceptional educational
researcher, especially in the context of South Africa. I also think about what will
shape me as I grow into a good researcher in the field of education. I draw from
my own personal experiences, my curiosity to learn, and some key ideas from
important scholars. I will also use ideas from Decolonising Methodologies by
Linda Tuhiwai Smith (1999) and other important concepts like intervention,
curiosity, courage, justice, and critique. This journey of becoming a researcher is
personal and powerful, and I want to explore it in a way that shows who I am and
who I hope to become.

writing reports. It is about deeply understanding the people, their history, and the
